The city recently received the final installment of the judgment against the Patel family after it exhausted appeals in the case. Police raided the Llano Hotel on Santa Rosa Avenue in , sued the Patel family for creating a public nuisance and bulldozed what assistant city attorney Mike Casey called their "flea-bag" motel 18 months later.
The investigation found that the owners not only knew about the prostitution going on at the room hotel, but profited from it. The city showed that the Patels charged inflated rents to pimps and hookers and even set "house rules" for prostitutes.
Fowler praised her staff for sticking with the case for more than five years through appeals that reached the U. Supreme Court. The most recent milestone in the case dealt with the award of the city's legal fees. Fowler said the published decision is precedent setting and will affect public agencies around the state.
